A Higher-Order Knuth-Bendix Procedure and Its Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
The completeness (i.e. confluent and terminating) property is an important concept when using a term rewriting system (TRS) as a computational model of functional programming languages. Knuth and Bendix have proposed a procedure known as the KB procedure for generating a complete TRS. A TRS cannot, however, directly handle higher-order functions that are widely used in functional programming languages. In this paper, we propose a higher-order KB procedure that extends the KB procedure to the framework of a simply-typed term rewriting system (STRS) as an extended TRS that can handle higher-order functions. We discuss the application of this higher-order KB procedure to a certification technique called inductionless induction used in program verification, and its application to fusion transformation, a typical kind of program transformation. key words: simply-typed term rewriting system, higher-order KB procedure, inductive theorem, inductionless induction, fusion transformation

A Taste of Rewrite Systems
This survey of the theory and applications of rewriting with equations discusses the existence and uniqueness of normal forms, the Knuth-Bendix completion procedure and its variations, as well as rewriting-based (functional and logic) programming and (equational, rst-order, and inductive) theorem proving. Ordinary, associative-commutative, and conditional rewriting are covered. Current areas of...
متن کاملFormalizing Knuth-Bendix Orders and Knuth-Bendix Completion
We present extensions of our Isabelle Formalization of Rewriting that cover two historically related concepts: the Knuth-Bendix order and the Knuth-Bendix completion procedure. The former, besides being the first development of its kind in a proof assistant, is based on a generalized version of the Knuth-Bendix order. We compare our version to variants from the literature and show all propertie...

The Knuth-Bendix completion algorithm is a procedure which generates confluent and terminating sets of rewrite rules. The algorithm has many applications: the resulting rules can be used as a decision procedure for equality or, in the case of program ...
متن کاملA Transfinite Knuth-Bendix Order for Lambda-Free Higher-Order Terms
We generalize the Knuth–Bendix order (KBO) to higher-order terms without λ-abstraction. The restriction of this new order to first-order terms coincides with the traditional KBO. The order has many useful properties, including transitivity, the subterm property, compatibility with contexts (monotonicity), stability under substitution, and well-foundedness. Transfinite weights and argument coeff...
متن کاملSlothrop: Knuth-Bendix Completion with a Modern Termination Checker
A Knuth-Bendix completion procedure is parametrized by a reduction ordering used to ensure termination of intermediate and resulting rewriting systems. While in principle any reduction ordering can be used, modern completion tools typically implement only Knuth-Bendix and path orderings. Consequently, the theories for which completion can possibly yield a decision procedure are limited to those...
